Responding May Have Been Unwise

Monday, August 15th, 2011

A simple rule regarding online petitions may be that they can be ignored until they hit 6 digits worth of signatures1. If a petition has fewer than 6000 signatures, it certainly doesn’t deserve a response. Nevertheless, The Sesame Workshop recently responded to an online petition which called for Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie to be married.

Bert and Ernie are best friends. They were created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves.

Even though they are identified as male characters and possess many human traits and characteristics (as most Sesame Street Muppets™ do), they remain puppets, and do not have a sexual orientation.

So much for their dreams of adopting a child.

Footnotes:

  1. They can likely also be ignored past that point. ↩︎
