Much Too Recent

Thursday, September 29th, 2016

In America, our despicable legacy of slavery is unfortunately far more recent than many realize. The new National Museum of African American History and Culture will hopefully help to enlighten more people. Ruth Odom Bonner was on hand at the opening ceremony for the museum, and she has quite a story.

“Ruth’s father, Elijah Odom, was born into servitude in Mississippi,” Obama told the audience. “He was born a slave.”

The daughter of a slave is still alive today. Just stop and think about that for a minute.
