That First Season, Goalies Actually Played in Street Clothes

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Tipped off by an article on NHL.com, I found this amusing story of Jacques Plante, the first goalie to wear a mask in the NHL. He did it 53 years ago yesterday, following an in-game injury, and never took it off after that. It’s worth noting that the NHL played its inaugural season 95 years ago, in 1917. How it took 42 years for someone to think “Hey, maybe I should protect my face from flying pucks”, I can’t imagine.
