Late in their Wednesday game against the Lakers, Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd “accidentally” dropped a cup of soda, forcing officials to pause the game while clean-up occurred. This was rather handy, as though the Nets were out of timeouts, they were able to use the break to draw up a play. The move has drawn plenty of attention and laughs, along with a $50,000 fine from the NBA.
However, as Sports Illustrated’s Extra Mustard blog notes, the Lakers had a rather hilarious response. As you can see here, Lakers players Xavier Henry and Steve Blake decided to join the Nets’ huddle! Steve Blake is even in front of a couple Nets.
Ultimate, the so-called “Cupgate” scandal proved meaningless, as the Lakers held on to their lead for the win. When it comes to stupidly-named scandals featuring the the -gate suffix like this though, I still get a chuckle out of a realization I had years ago:
