Come on, Sam Adams

“Stop on by and give us money.”

Organized running races often dole out an assortment of swag to participants. I’ve received small running accessories, snacks, samples of energy gels, and many other freebies. Last month, as part of a race I ran, I was given the following card:

A card that says “Visit us for a pint!”

I showed the card to several friends, and asked a simple question: Does this card entitle me to a free beer? Much debate ensued, and it was certainly not a sure thing. However, the “While supplies last” text, as well as the rest of the fine print, tilted things in favor of it being provided free gratis.

The downtown taproom is near my house, so after spectating the Boston Marathon, I stopped in. I ordered the 26.2 Brew, and presented the card. The bartender looked at it, and then sighed. She then explained:

  • What that is, is an invitation to come join us here and buy a beer.

Given the aforementioned debate, I can’t claim I was shocked. Nevertheless, I certainly was surprised. Do I really need an invitation to come give them money? If this is simply an ad, why on earth does it need the legalese?

But really, more to the point, Sam Adams? C’mon, man.
