Louisiana has just enacted a law requiring the display of the Ten Commandments in every classroom throughout the state. The overtly Biblical content must be shown on “a poster or framed document that is at least eleven inches by fourteen inches”, with the commandments “printed in a large, easily readable font” and serving as the display’s “central focus”.

Does this law flagrantly violate the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment? Oh, most definitely, no matter how much these skintags try to wrap it in a deceiftful context of “history”.

In 1980, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a similar Kentucky law was unconstitutional and violated the establishment clause of the U.S. Constitution, which says Congress can “make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” The high court found that the law had no secular purpose but rather served a plainly religious purpose.

Given the respect for precedents the current conservatives on the bench have shown, I have every minimal confidence that they’ll correctly strike this down.
