On June 26, a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Toronto Blue Jays was suspended in the second inning due to rain. At the time, Toronto’s catcher Danny Jansen at the plate. Since then, however, Jansen was traded. He now plays for the Red Sox, and when the game resumes later today, he’s going to make MLB history by playing for both teams in the same game. It’s pretty great.
The whole thing is amusing and ridiculous, but it actually could’ve been even more so. If Jansen had had two strikes on him when the game was suspended, the end result of the at-bat would have been credited to him, regardless of the fact that a pinch hitter stepped in to finish it. In that scenario, had the pinch-hitter replacing Jansen whiffed, Jansen would have caught his own strike out.
Alas, that will have to wait for some future game. For now, though Danny Jansen is probably not ticketed for the Hall of Fame, some of his gear will likely appear there soon.
