The Universe Answered

What are the odds?

A week and a half ago, I posted about Siri’s Super Bowl failings. That piece got picked up pretty widely, which resulted in a fair amount of traffic and traction. It also seems to have prompted some emergency fixes from Apple:

A Siri question and response. Question: Who won Super Bowl 13? Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl 13 Winner

After my original post went up, I stumbled on a hilarious–in–retrospect press release from Apple headlined “Hey Siri, who’s going to win the Super Bowl?”. That press release was sent out in January of 2017. Yes, eight years ago, Apple was touting Siri specifically for answering Super Bowl-related trivia. For it to be so incompetent nearly a decade later is incredible.

However, something even more incredible happened just two days after my original post, while I was on vacation 2000 miles away in another country. With the query that had kicked off this whole thing still fresh in my mind, I passed a complete stranger who had the answer I had sought. In fact, he was literally wearing it:

A man in a Super Bowl XIII shirt, which shows the final score.

As you can see, this fellow’s shirt commemorated Super Bowl XIII. It even features the final 35-31 score by which “Couldn’t spell “CAT” if you spotted him the ‘C’ and the ‘T’” Terry Bradshaw and the Pittsburgh Steelers edged out Hollywood Henderson’s Dallas Cowboys.

Apparently, the universe heard my query and decided to answer. While it took a little longer than Siri, it was far more accurate on its first try.
