Apparently, the hot new thing for wealthy couples getting married is inviting celebrities they don’t know.
Bailey’s clients’ plea underscores wedding culture’s latest obsession: adding strangers—ideally famous, powerful ones—to the invite list.
The headline of the aforelinked article asks “Why Is Everyone Inviting Strangers to Their Weddings?”, but to me, the more relevant question is why are strangers attending? At least for some, the answer is apparently “money”.
That’s why some normie one-percenters are now paying VIPs to show up at their ceremony. While Lady Gaga costs seven-figures to croon, athletes appear for far less moolah. “A sports figure is more than likely to show up for a couple of $100,000,” says planner-to-the-stars Marcy Blum, who adds that athletes sometimes cosplay as friends of the couple throughout the night.
This is both sad and stupid.
