A very bad thing happened in Ferguson, Missouri last Saturday, with the shooting of Michael Brown. The official police account is strongly contradicted by eyewitness accounts, and the investigation is ongoing. Since the shooting, very bad things have continued to happen. Angry citizens have rioted and looted, while police have only stoked everyone’s ire.
Last night, an elected official (Alderman Antonio French) as well as at least two reporters (Wesley Lowery of The Washington Post and Ryan Reilly of The Huffington Post) were arrested with little or no cause, and they’re far from the only ones. Rather than de-escalating the situation, militarized police have pointed guns at unarmed civilians, making the city appear more like a war zone than an American suburb. Enough is enough.
