Perhaps Send Some Tasteful Boudoir Photographs

Also, what the hell are “plant shavings”? Surely drugs would fall under some other prohibition.

Until now, the only Luigi who’s gotten any ink on OFT is Luigi Mario.1 I haven’t had much to say about Luigi Mangione, the suspected killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Murder is awful. In too many ways, the for-profit healthcare system in America is as well. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but one bad turn can certainly lead to another.

Beyond those simple thoughts, One Foot Tsunami is not your source for information on the world’s most popular assassin of healthcare executives. For that, you should look no further than the prosaically-domained Luigi Mangione Info dot com. I recently wound up on that site’s FAQ, which includes this:

Can I send Luigi photos?

Luigi is allowed to receive photos via Shutterfly and FreePrints in accordance with mail procedures while in custody, following the Federal Bureau of Prisons Program Statement No. 5800.16 (Mail Management Manual) and Program Statement No. 5265.11 (Correspondence). Due to the volume of photos, they could take longer than usual to be screened and shared. Luigi appreciates the photos that are sent and kindly asks that people send no more than five photos at a time. Please note that every photo that is received is screened and reviewed by law enforcement.

I was tipped off to this question by a story with the headline “Luigi Mangione pleads with fans to stop sending him so many photos”. Given the thirsting that the internet has been doing for Mangione, it’s not difficult to imagine the sorts of pictures strangers are sending. “Receiving too many nudes” is quite a problem to have, and I chuckled at the possibility that this plea was a bit of reverse psychology. Sarcastic Wonka voice: “Stop. Don’t.”.2

That led me to wonder exactly what that “Mail Management Manual” says about naked photographs.3 Here’s a direct quote (emphasis added):

Minor or nuisance physical things (such as hair, plant shavings, small artifacts and items, and sexually explicit personal photographs, etc.) are not authorized and will be returned to the sender.

Alas, your nudes are not reaching Luigi Mangione.

Footnotes:

  1. I’m a little sorry about writing that post, and also about linking you to it. But what’s done is done. Here’s a goofy related tweet from more carefree times to make it up to you:

A tweet which reads “I really can't decide which Brother got it worse when it comes to names: Luigi Mario or Mario Mario“

Ah, the good old days. ↩︎

  2. The full video is archived here. Gene Wilder’s weariness is a delight.

Also worth noting, “Help. Police. Murder.” was the approximate reaction millions of people had to the initial shooting. Anyone who tries to tell you Americans love their private health insurance is either a liar, an idiot, or both. ↩︎

  3. In attempting to obtain this document, Google led me to a page on the Federal Bureau of Prisons site which I imagine previously hosted it. However, at the present time, that site shows the following nonsense:

A screenshot including the text “This content is temporarily unavailable as we implement the Executive Order on ‘Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government.’“

I tracked down a PDF from this link. In the absence of a proper government source, I’m forced to assume it’s accurate. This sure is a hell of a way to run a country. ↩︎
