Long have I loathed the leather buttons seen in several new interfaces from Apple, for they haunt my brain. From what distant future-past do they come? Will they return to it soon, leaving me in peace? I can only hope.
This sort of thing is known as skeuomorphism – taking a real-world element and rendering it graphically. While it’s sometimes used as a dirty word, the concept itself is relatively neutral. The execution, however, is often terrible. Skeu It! is a site dedicated to skeuering, err, skewering, the worst examples. Like this one:
